New to Yoga? Let us answer some of your questions.

Welcome! The majority of our classes are suitable for beginners. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions. If you still have questions after reading this, please do not hesitate to contact the Center’s Director, Kamla Sufi at  kamla@danvilleyogacenter.com.

When can I start?

You are welcome to attend any ongoing yoga class.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

After taking the Beginner’s series,  we offer you  as a new student 3 classes for $30. We encourage you to try a variety of teachers and times, though a natural transition from the Monday evening class is Thursday evening with Sarah at 7:15pm. You will meet her in your Beginner class as the assistant to Katlheen. You can buy a single session called a “drop-in” or you can buy a series of sessions in increments of 5, 10 and 15 classes. Payment is accepted at the time of class. For a complete listing of costs please click here: classes and fees. There is no pre-registration for classes, only for workshops, retreats, outings and series.

What should I bring and how should I dress?

Please bring your own mat. We have all the props. Then just arrive and relax! Wear basketball shorts or stretchy pants, nothing that would cover your feet. Even before you enter the room, you are asked to please remove your shoes in order to keep the room clean. Practice is done barefoot on your mat. Do not eat for at least an hour before class. A bottle of water on hand may be a good idea for after class.

Do I have to be really limber and in good shape before starting yoga?

No. In fact the very reason many people choose yoga is to become more limber, increase their range of motion, tone and strengthen. Each class encourages you to move at your own pace and within your own comfort zone. Most students come to yoga because they have some body problem -bad back, knee surgery, aching joints. We assist many chiropractic, wholistic and physical therapy patients through their recoveries. Take a moment to talk to the yoga teacher prior to class and let them know your limitations.

Which classes are best for beginners?

Beginning students are welcome in any class listed with a Beginner or Level 1. You may also attend the Restorative, Beginner’s, and 50+. Arrive a few minutes before class and let the teacher know you are new to the Center.

What can I expect to get out of a yoga class?

Unlike stretching or fitness, yoga is more than just physical. Yoga is unique because the practice connects the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind to the rhythm of the breath. Connecting the mind, body, and breath helps you to become more aware of your experiences from moment to moment, off the mat. This awareness is what makes yoga a practice, rather than a goal . Your body will most likely become more flexible by doing yoga as the space inside of you opens and your muscles lengthen. Your mind will become more relaxed and you will likely experience a high level of stress reduction, allowing you to sleep better and feel more at ease during the day.  The body work in yoga also develops muscle definition and core strength. Often yoga students will change their eating, sleeping and other health related habits to support their practice.
